NAAZ DO YOU?

The noteworthy Naaz has released her beautiful struggle EP after turning our heads with the powerful number ‘TAPED’. As you know, we’re advocates of the single here at TMR as there’s a clear favourite in our hearts from the Dutch-Kurdish artist’s newest work - ‘Do You?’ The track opens with lo-fi acoustic strings and Naaz’ distinct voice singing directly to a distant lover, “I don’t want to sound needy, but do you - love me?” Accompanying this vulnerable moment is some otherworldly visuals of Naaz atop a mountain, surrounded by low-set clouds and drenched in delicious golden-hour light. When the singer’s voice amps up the intensity, turning almost to a riot grrrl yell, the video flickers with dramatic scenes; ring of fire, occultist triangles of light, burning mirror, darkening skies. All of this excellent work by the team behind the video is no doubt inspired by Naaz’s raw energy and the personal experiences that have led to this track. As the artist explains: “When I was writing this song, I was thinking of how I could explain to my psychologist as clearly as possible what’s going on in my mind. How I see the world, how it feels like it’s on fire most of the time, how I can’t seem to find a way to get out, while all the burning wounds are stacking up and up. This video summarizes the journey of the endless wonder about what is wrong with you, the frustration it brings and how it can make you feel alienated from the world, even though you know there are so many more people like you.” What’s revealed here is so much more than musical talent, it’s a young person coming to accept their diagnosis, and by extension all of herself. - Hannah Thacker
